New boy questions - William Whiteley - 08-18-2005

Hi,

I have just been offered a job in Brisbane by my company in the UK. I'm very tempted but am concerned about how expensive it is to get a car and a place to live. I have been advised £5000 and £10000 respectively. Is Brisbane really UK prices?! I imagined it as really expensive!

Finally, my girlfriend ultimately wants to join me in Brisbane. She is a geologist of 18 months experience. Has she any chance of gaining employment?!

Cheers,

Will

Hi,

The United local Emirate has its own currency. The local Emirate Dirham. If you company told you that they are going to give you that amount of pounds per month for a car and appartment then you will be laughing all the way to the bank. I would check again. And if they are not paying that and informed you that you will be paying that much then they are not really in touch with reality as cars here are practically 1/2 the price of the UK and rent a third of what it costs in downtown London.

As for your g/f, should be no problem for her to get work. But you cannot sponsor her at all because you are not married and legally she cannot live with you at all (that rule can be broken by not declaring that she is staying with you).

Cheers. Unfortunately, it is 5 grand and 10 grand for the year! Still if cars and property are cheaper then that looks alright.

Yes 5K for a car and 10K for a house in pounds is fine for a year.... Would come out to about 1.2-1.3KAUD/mo for a car (wouldn't get you a BMW per say but would still fetch you a respectable ride)... And a 5.6KAUD/mo would get you a 2 bedroom appartment with a gym and pool if you look well enough....
